Description of Calculation
This performs a comprehensive analysis of an Stock investment over a specified time period by simulating both an initial lump-sum investment and regular bi-weekly contributions. The key steps involved in the calculation are as follows:
Initial Investment
The initial investment amount (e.g., $5,000) is divided by the Stocks closing price on the start date to calculate the initial number of shares purchased.
Periodic Investments
The daily closing prices are resampled to a bi-weekly frequency, taking the last available price in each two-week period.
At each bi-weekly interval, a fixed investment amount (e.g., $200) is divided by the Stock price at that time to determine the number of shares purchased.
Shares purchased through periodic investments are cumulatively summed over time to track total shares owned.
Dividend Adjustments
Dividend data for the Stock is fetched.
For each dividend payment date, the we calculates the number of shares owned on or before that date.
Total dividends received are computed by multiplying the dividend per share by the shares owned on the ex-dividend date and summing across all dividend payments.
Portfolio Valuation and Returns
The total shares owned at the end of the investment period (initial plus periodic shares) are multiplied by the current Stock price to determine the final portfolio value.
The total amount invested is the sum of the initial investment and all periodic contributions.
The average cost basis per share is calculated by dividing the total invested by the total shares owned.
Total returns are calculated both excluding and including dividends:
Without dividends: Percentage gain/loss based on portfolio value relative to total invested.
With dividends: Percentage gain/loss including the value of dividends received.
This also computes the annualized average return (CAGR) for both cases over the investment horizon.
Important Note on Purchase Timing
This simulation assumes purchases occur on specific dates based on the closing prices at bi-weekly intervals.
If you buy shares on different days or at different prices than those used in this calculation, your actual investment results will differ from the results shown here. Market prices fluctuate daily, and timing can significantly impact the number of shares acquired and overall returns.
This approach aims to provide a realistic simulation of an Stock investment strategy incorporating dollar-cost averaging and dividend reinvestment, offering valuable insights into potential investment performance over time while highlighting the importance of purchase timing and market variability.
Important Note: When performing these calculations, it’s essential to verify that the mathematical processes are accurate.
